Softball to open ASC Tournament play Thursday

TYLER, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team will open play in the 2016 American Southwest Conference Softball Championship Tournament Thursday on the campus of the University of Texas at Tyler. The Cru finished the regular season at 19-19 with a 16-14 record in conference play and will be the No. 5 seed at the tournament. The tournament runs Thursday, April 28th through Saturday, April 30th with the championship game set for 5 p.m. Saturday.
 
UMHB will open the tournament on Thursday, April 28th in a 1 p.m. game against No. 4 seed LeTourneau University. The winner of that game will advance to face No. 1 seed U.T.-Tyler at 7 p.m. on Thursday. No. 3 seed U.T.-Dallas opens the tournament against No. 6 seed Louisiana College on Thursday at 10 a.m. with the winner advancing to face No. 2 seed East Texas Baptist. Friday's schedule will open with elimination bracket games and include a 4 p.m. semifinal matchup while Saturday will feature a 2 p.m. semifinal matchup and 5 p.m. championship game. Sunday, May 1st is reserved as a weather day and will also host an if-necessary game should the double-elimination format require it.


The Cru is making its 17th consecutive appearance in the tournament, tying East Texas Baptist as the conference school with the most appearances in the event. The Cru is 18-32 all-time in the tournament and has made it to the championship game three times. UMHB went 2-2 against LeTourneau this season, with a 1-2 mark in conference play. The YellowJackets enter the tournament at 17-13 in league play with a 20-20 overall record. The tournament also features nationally-ranked opponents in No. 1 U.T.-Tyler (37-2) and No. 17 East Texas Baptist (31-8).

This is the 17th year of the ASC Softball Championship Tournament and the first year back to a six-team bracket after spending three seasons with an eight-team tournament. Admission to the tournament is $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. Tournament t-shirts are available for $20 on site. U.T.-Tyler operates until the ASC's No Pet Policy and will enforce that rule for leashed and unleashed pets within the confines of the facility. The winner of the tournament will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Softball Championship.
