Softball sweeps University of the Ozarks with two shutout wins

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept University of the Ozarks 5-0, 8-0 Friday evening in Belton. The wins improved UMHB to 16-11 on the season with an 11-9 conference mark while the Eagles fell to 6-18 overall and 4-13 in league play.
 
UMHB opened the game with a two-run first inning. Makenzi Dawson and Leah Brown went for a double-steal, scoring Dawson for a 1-0 lead. Brown scored one batter later off an RBI groundout from Karley Free.  The Cru added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning, scoring on back-to-back RBI doubles from Free and Kourtney Cummings. Connor O'Neal added UMHB's final run of the game, scoring off an RBI single from Devon Walter to secure the 5-0 win. Brown and Drake led the Cru with two hits while Brown had a team-high two runs scored and Free hit in a team-high two RBI. Karen Tennis earned the win in the circle for UMHB, pitching five innings with three hits allowed and three strikeouts. Haley Parker pitched in relief of Tennis, going two innings with one hit allowed. Hannah Oler took the loss for Ozarks, allowing nine hits and five runs in six innings of work. UMHB totaled five runs on four hits with three errors while Ozarks had four hits with one error.
 
Devon Walter opened the second game of the doubleheader with a home run off the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Linsey Tomlinson followed that with a solo shot in the bottom of the second for a 2-0 Cru lead. UMHB added two more runs in the bottom of the third with back-to-back RBI hits from Kourtney Cummings and Myranda Hinojosa. The Cru sealed the game with a three-run fifth inning with runs from Whitney Flournoy, Tomlinson and Bailey Bohlken. Dawson led the Cru with two hits while Tomlinson had a team-high two runs scored. CeCe Darilek earned the complete game shutout win for UMHB, pitching all five innings with just two hits allowed. Darilek struck out four batters and walked just two. Katie Ventress took the loss for Ozarks, pitching four innings with eight hits and seven runs allowed. UMHB totaled eight runs on 10 hits with no errors while the Eagles had two hits and one error.
 
UMHB returns to action tomorrow in a 12 p.m. game against University of the Ozarks at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
