BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team swept Howard Payne University 3-0 Friday evening in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 12-1 on the season and 7-0 in American Southwest Conference action while the Yellow Jackets fell to 2-12 overall and 1-6 in league play.
UMHB gained advantage in the first set with a 5-0 run to take a lead and did not let up, cruising to a 25-9 first-set victory.
Lauren Williams came in to the second set for the Cru and served five consecutive points to once again give UMHB a five-point advantage. The Yellow Jackets tied the match at 11 but UMHB pulled away with an 8-3 run, eventually taking the second set 25-18. UMHB sealed the match with a 25-12 third-set victory.
Corinne Novak led the Cru with 11 kills while
Miranda Klein added eight. UMHB hit .465 in the match, slamming 40 kills on 71 attacks.
Cory Jo Martin anchored the Cru offense with 27 assists, followed by Klein with five. Defensively, Klein led the Cru with six blocks and nine digs. UMHB totaled 34 assists, 45 digs and nine team blocks in the match, limiting the Yellow Jackets to a -.024 hitting percentage.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, September 29
th in a noon match against Sul Ross State University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
