SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team split the second day of competition at the Trinity University Tournament, beating UC Santa Cruz 3-1 before falling 3-1 to tournament-host Trinity.
UMHB took the first set 25-14 over UCSC, but fell 25-22 in the second to even the match at 1-1. The Cru then took a 25-12 win in the third and edged the Banana Slugs 27-25 in the fourth to earn the 3-1 victory.
Miranda Klein led the Cru with 13 kills followed by
Corinne Novak with 12. UMHB hit .228 in the match, totaling 50 kills on 145 attacks.
Cory Jo Martin led the Cru with 36 assists in the match, followed by Klein with nine.
Jenna Gillean was the team's defensive leader, putting up 22 digs while
Kayla Janikula put up seven blocks. UMHB totaled 77 digs and 13 team blocks, limiting the Banana Slugs to a .114 hitting percentage in the contest.
Adrien Valdez also tied the UMHB Division III record for service aces in a match with nine.
The Cru followed that match with a close contest against No. 10 Trinity. UMHB fell 25-20 in the first wet and 25-21 in the second. The Cru responded with a 25-23 win in the third, but fell 25-17 in the fourth to take a 3-1 loss to the Tigers.
Jenna Gillean totaled 11 kills in the contest, followed by Novak and Janikula with eight each. UMHB hit 42 kills on 164 attacks with Martin assisting 31 kills. Defensively,
Adrien Valdez led the Cru with 27 digs while Gillean added 10. UMHB put up 11 blocks on the Tigers, led by Janikula with five.
UMHB returns to action in the ASC Crossover II on the campus of Concordia University Texas in Austin. The Cru opens crossover play against UT Dallas at 5 p.m. on Friday, October 18
th.
