Volleyball beats UT Dallas 3-2 in come-from-behind win

AUSTIN, Texas  – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 3-2 win over the University of Texas at Dallas Friday evening in Austin.    
 
UMHB trailed 2-0 in the match with a 25-15 loss in the first set and a 27-15 loss in the second.
The Cru jumped to an early 8-1 lead in the third set, cruising to a 25-19 win. The fourth set played even with 13 tied scores. UMHB trailed 24-23 late but rallied to tie the set at 25. Hope Hoelscher and Jenna Gillean hit back-to-back kills to give UMHB a 27-25 win and even the match at 2-2. UMHB jumped to a 2-0 lead in the fifth set but the Comets rallied to take a 3-2 lead. With the set tied at 4-4, UMHB went on a 4-0 run to take an 8-4 lead at the split. The Cru allowed the Comets just five points after that, limiting the Comets to a -.150 hitting percentage in the set. UMHB took a 15-10 win in the final set to earn the 3-2 match victory.
 
Kayla Janikula led the Cru with 12 kills while Gillean added 11. UMHB hit 52 kills on 157 attacks in the match. Miranda Klein led the Cru with 34 assists while Cory Jo Martin added seven and Adrien Valdez had five. Defensively, Gillean led the Cru with 25 digs while Valdez added 15 and Klein recorded nine. Janikula was UMHB's leading blocker with four, followed by Sarah Paolini and Klein with three each. UMHB totaled 50 assists, 71 digs and seven team blocks. UT Dallas hit .194 in the contest with 80 digs and eight team blocks.
 
The Cru improved to 17-6 on the season and 11-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the win. UT Dallas fell to 16-4 overall and 7-3 in league action. UMHB returns to play on Saturday, October 19th in a 12 p.m. contest against LeTourneau University on the campus of Concordia University Texas in Austin.
