BELTON, Texas – The quest for a third consecutive American Southwest Conference championship officially begins for the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team when the regular season opens this weekend. The Cru will hit the road for non-conference matches at Southwestern University and at Texas Lutheran University on the opening weekend of the season.
UMHB is picked to win the ASC again in the league's annual Preseason Coaches' Poll and the Cru was also receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25. Head Coach
Brad Bankhead has eight starters back along with 29 lettermen from a team that finished 16-4-1 overall and went 8-2 in the ASC. UMHB has also advanced to at least the Second Round of the NCAA Division III National Championships in each of the last two seasons. The Cru loses a pair of All-Region players and its starting goalkeeper, but welcomes back three All-Conference players. Forward
Patrick Roach (So., Kingwood) was also an All-Region selection after scoring 11 goals and totaling 25 points last season. Midfielder
Tyler Childs (Jr., Boerne) and forward
Seth Neveloff (Jr., Wylie) also earned spots on the All-ASC squad last season and will be counted on to help lead the offense again this year. Sixteen newcomers join the 29 returners as UMHB will enter the season with a 45-man roster.
The Cru will face Southwestern on Friday, August 30
th, before taking on the Bulldogs on Saturday, August 31
st. Both of those matches are scheduled for 8 pm starts. Links to live coverage will be posted on cruathletics.com as soon as they become available. UMHB will play its home opener on Saturday, September 14
th, as part of a schedule that only includes five home matches.
