SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team bounced back from Friday night's loss to the tournament host with a solid performance to start the day, but the Cru settled for a split of its two matches at Trinity University Tournament on Saturday. UMHB, ranked 15
th in the country in the AVCA Preseason Top 25 Poll, is now 2-2 to start the season.
The Cru opened the day with a 3-0 victory over Neumann, taking a 25-13, 25-18, 25-15 decision. UMHB broke open the first game with a 9-0 run and used a 7-1 run to control the second game. Neumann was within 13-11 in the third before the Cru broke off a 6-0 streak to take control.
Jenna Gillean led UMHB with eight kills and 13 digs and
Hope Hoelscher and
Miranda Klein added seven kills apiece to a balanced Cru attack.
Cory Jo Martin had 21 assists and
Haleigh Evans (11) and Klein (10) also reached double figures in digs. UMHB hit .286 as a team and held Neumann to a hitting percentage of .038.
The Cru dominated the first game of the second match, but could not hold off Saint Benedict's huge comeback in a 3-1 loss. UMHB opened the match with a 12-2 run and never looked back in a 25-9 game. The Bennies used a 9-1 run to seize control of the second game and won 25-15. Saint Benedict took the third game 25-17 and held on for a 25-23 victory in the fourth after the Cru fought back from a 14-9 deficit to even it at 23. Klein had a match-high 16 kills to lead UMHB and
Corinne Novak added 12 kills. Evans topped the team with 17 digs as Klein chipped in 15. Martin registered 38 assists. The Cru hit .199 as a team, but were out blocked 7-2 in the loss.
UMHB will return to action with a trip to the Berry College National Invitational next weekend. The Cru will play four matches over two days, beginning with a 1 pm Eastern Time start against Endicott on Friday.
