Women’s Soccer fights back to tie Howard Payne

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's soccer team overcame a two-goal deficit to tie the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets 2-2 Saturday afternoon in Brownwood. UMHB moved to 9-2-1 on the season and 4-1-1 in American Southwest Conference action while the Yellow Jackets improved to 8-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in league play.
 
Katie Burnside scored in the 32nd minute on a double-assist form Kendra Cecil and Caitlyn Hernandez, giving Howard Payne a one-goal lead. The Yellow Jackets added to that after halftime when Lindsey Schiller scored an unassisted goal to put HPU up by two. UMHB fought back with goals in the 63rd and 70th minutes. Kennedy Harris scored for the Cru at 62:59 before Mackenzie Worthy netted the equalizer off an assist from Carly Van Essen at 69:58.
 
The game remained tied through regulation and both overtime periods, sealing the 2-2 tie. UMHB outshot the Yellow Jackets 36-9 in the contest, including an 8-1 deficit in overtime periods. Grace Greenly led the Cru with nine shots followed by Worthy with six. The Cru put 27 shots on frame, including three in each overtime period.
 
Ainsley Westlake and Reagan Williams split time in the net for the Cru. Westlake made two saves with one goal allowed while Williams had one goal allowed and four saves. Delaney Castor was the hero for the Yellow Jackets. Castor allowed two goals and made 24 saves in the full 110-minute contest.
 
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, October 16th in a 1 p.m. contest against Belhaven University at the UMHB Soccer Fields in Belton.
