Baseball run rules Austin College

SHERMAN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team took control of the game with a big second inning and the Cru rolled to an 11-1 victory over Austin College Friday night in Sherman. UMHB improves to 2-6 on the season with the win while the loss drops the Kangaroos to 3-2 on the year.

UMHB exploded for six runs in the top of the second inning. Luke Kilgore's sacrifice fly plated the first run and Kaden deBerardinis followed with a bases loaded walk. Caimyn Holiday had a two-run single and deBerardinis would score on a wild pitch. Hunter McQuary would close out the scoring with another sacrifice fly to push the lead to 6-0. deBerardinis had a sacrifice fly on his own in the top of the third to give the Cru a 7-0 advantage. The Roos put a run on the board in the bottom of the third, but Ryan Grosz got it back as he joined the sacrifice fly club with one of his own in the top of the fourth. Mateo Calle stole third and came around to score on a throwing error later in that frame to give UMHB a 9-1 lead. Calle tacked on an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning and deBerardinis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to push the lead out to 11-1. The Cru defense held up from there as the game ended on the run rule after Zach Honey pitched a perfect bottom of the seventh.

Jeb Zolman earned the win for UMHB after scattering two hits, striking out five and allowing just one run in six innings of work. Zolman is now 1-2 on the season. Calle led the Cru offense with four hits and deBerardinis drove in three runs on the night.

The two teams will close out the series with a 3 pm doubleheader on Saturday. UMHB will then return home to host Schreiner University for a non-conference doubleheader next Tuesday.
