SHERMAN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team built a big early lead to win the second game and salvage a split of a doubleheader with Austin College Saturday in Sherman. The Cru took game two 8-1 after falling 3-2 in the opening game. UMHB is now 3-7 on the season while AC moves to 4-3 on the year with the split.
The Cru jumped out to an early lead in the second game and cruised to an 8-1 victory. UMHB put four on the board in the opening inning on a run-scoring error and RBI singles from
Mateo Calle,
Ryan Farmer and
Hunter McQuary. Zolman doubled home a run in the top of the second and
Dawson Shibley added an RBI single in the top of the third to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Kaden deBerardinis tripled home a run in the top of the fifth inning to give the Cru a 7-0 advantage. Austin College got a run back on a double play in the bottom of the fifth. Calle's RBI single made it 8-1 in the top of the sixth. The Cru made it stand up by setting the Roos down in their final two at bats. Calle and Zolman had three hits apiece to lead UMHB's 13-hit attack.
Trevor Ripke earned the win to move to 1-2 for the Cru. He struck out four and allowed just five hits in five innings of work.
UMHB could not overcome a three-run fourth-inning in a 3-2 game one loss. Zolman led off the top of the fourth inning with a triple and scored on Calle's sacrifice fly to give the Cru a 1-0 lead. The Roos answered with three runs in the bottom of that frame. UMHB committed two early errors with the first run of the inning scoring on the second miscue. Back-to-back Austin College singles put the Roos up 3-1. The Cru cut it to 3-2 on McQuary's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh, but UMHB left runners at second and third to end the comeback bid.
Andrew Acierni took the loss for the Cru to drop to 1-2. He scattered three hits, struck out five and allowed just one earned run in six innings of work. Five different players had hits for UMHB in the contest.
The Cru will now return home to host Schreiner University in a 2 pm doubleheader on Tuesday at Red Murff Field. The same two teams will then turn around and play another doubleheader in Kerrville on Wednesday.
