Baseball sweeps doubleheader from Schreiner

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team used timely hitting in the late innings of both games to post a doubleheader sweep of Schreiner University Tuesday in Belton. The Cru won game one 5-4 and took game two 4-2 to improve to 5-7 on the season. The Mountaineers drop to 5-6 on the year with the two losses.

The Cru won game 5-4 on a walk-off, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kaden deBerardinis doubled home a run in the bottom of third to give UMHB a 1-0 lead. Jeffrey Williams hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to give Schreiner a 2-1 lead. The Cru answered with Hunter Jones' two-run double in the bottom of that frame. The Mountaineers tied it up in the top of the fifth before Malek Bolin put UMHB up 4-3 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth. Schreiner tied it again with an unearned run in the top of the seventh. The Cru loaded the bases with two outs in the inning and Hunter McQuary singled up the middle to drive in Jeb Zolman with the game-winner. Zack Honey (1-0) earned the win for UMHB with two and a third innings of one-hit relief work. McQuary had four hits for the Cru in the win.

The Cru scored three runs in the final two innings of the 4-2 game two wins. Mateo Calle singled home a run in the bottom of the first to give UMHB an early lead, but Schreiner responded with single runs in the third and fifth for a 2-1 lead. Calle took the lead back with a two-run blast over the wall in left-center in the bottom of the fifth and Dawson Shibley's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth provided an insurance run. Calle, Jones and Rhett Grosz all had two hits apiece for UMHB, Zach Carroll picked up the win to move to 1-0 with three innings of two-hit relief work.

The same two teams will now turn around and play a noon doubleheader in Kerrville on Wednesday. UMHB's weekend series against University of the Ozarks has been canceled due to COVID-10 health and safety protocols.
