Game Recap: Baseball | | Jon Wallin - UMHB Sports Information

Baseball sweeps Schreiner for second straight day

KERRVILLE, Texas – A day after winning a pair close, low-scoring games from Schreiner, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team flipped the script and jumped out to big early leads on the way to a doubleheader sweep of the Mountaineers Wednesday in Kerrville. The Cru took game on 12-6 and won game two 16-2. UMHB is now 7-7 on the season and has won six of its last seven games. Schreiner drops to 5-8 on the year with the two losses.

UMHB exploded for a seven-run second inning on the way to 12-6 game one victory. Malek Bolin opened the scoring with an RBI fielder's choice in the top of the first before the Cru added to it with seven more in the second. Rhett Grosz singled home the first run before another run scored on a Mountaineer error. Dawson Shibley doubled home two runs, Caimyn Holiday blasted a two-run homer and Bolin followed with a solo shot to make it 8-0 UMHB. Schreiner got a run back in the bottom of the second and one more in the third to cut the lead to 8-2. Hunter McQuary singled home a run and came around to score on a wild pitch as the Cru stretched it to 10-3 in the top of the fourth. The Mountaineers pushed across two runs in the bottom of that inning to close to within 10-5. UMHB got those runs back on Jeb Zolman's two-run single in the top of the fifth. Schreiner scored one in the bottom of the seventh, but the Cru held on for the win. Harrison Sims (1-0) earned the win for UMHB with three and two-thirds innings of two-hit relief work. Holiday had four hits and finished a triple short of the cycle for the Cru and McQuary added three hits.

UMHB put six runs on the board in the top of the first inning in game two and rolled to a 16-2 win. Zolman blasted a two-run homer to open the scoring and Daylon Nebgen added an RBI single. Rhett Grosz closed out the inning with a three-run homer. The Cru added four more in the second on two-run singles from McQuary and Nebgen. The Mountaineers put two runs on the board in the bottom of the second to cut it to 10-2. Holiday singled home a run in the top of the third and Malek Bolin hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth. UMHB then added four more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Hunter Jones tripled home the first run and scored on Dawson Shibley's double. Holiday added an RBI triple and scored on Bolin's RBI double. Andrew Acierni earned the win for the Cru to even his record at 2-2. He scattered four hits in five innings and did not allow an earned run. Shibley and Bolin had three hits apiece and four other players added two hits in the game.

The Cru was scheduled to host University of the Ozarks for a three-game conference series this weekend, but those games have been canceled due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols. UMHB is looking to add games to the schedule to replace those, but nothing is confirmed at this time.
