BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team jumped on the #1 team in the country early, but Trinity stormed back with a pair of big innings as the Cru fell to the top-ranked Tigers 16-7 Tuesday night in Belton. UMHB falls to 7-8 on the season with the loss while Trinity improves to 10-1 with the win.
UMHB put four runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning.
Mateo Calle doubled home two runs and came around to score on
Hunter McQuary's RBI double. McQuary would score the fourth run on a Trinity wild pitch. The Tigers responded by scoring seven runs in the top of the second. The Cru left the bases loaded in the bottom of that frame and it would stay 7-4 into the bottom of the fifth. UMHB tied the game with three runs in that inning.
Rhett Grosz singled home the first run,
Kaden deBerardinis drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt and Grosz tied it at 7 by scoring on a wild pitch. Trinity took advantage of two costly Cru errors and added Tyler Pettit's two-run single in a four-run sixth inning as the Tigers retook the lead at 11-7. Trinity added single runs in the top of the seventh and eighth innings to stretch the lead to 13-7. A three-run ninth gave the Tigers a 16-7 advantage and UMHB could not close the gap from there.
Grosz had three hits for the Cru as UMHB finished with eight hits on the night.
Zack Honey took the loss for the Cru to drop to 1-1 on the year. Rafe Chaumette had three of Trinity's 15 hits and Joseph Chavana earned the win for the Tigers to move to 3-0 on the season.
UMHB returns to action with a three-game conference series at UT Dallas this weekend in Richardson. The two teams play a single game Friday afternoon before closing out the series with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
