Volleyball sweeps doubleheader with Sul Ross State

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team dominated Sul Ross State University Friday afternoon in Belton, sweeping the Lobos in two consecutive sets. UMHB improved to 9-1 on the season and 9-1 in American Southwest Conference action while the Lobos fell to 4-4 overall and 4-4 in league play.
 
Sul Ross State scored the first point of the first match but did not lead again as UMHB used a 5-0 run to gain a substantial lead and take a 25-15 first-set win. UMHB used a 4-0 run midway through the second set to take a lead and win the set 25-18 and cruised to another 25-15 win in the third. Hannah Frasca led the Cru with 15 kills, hitting .483 in the match. Kayla Janikula was also dominant offensively, hitting 12 kills for a .550 average while Corinne Novak went 7-0-16 in the match. UMHB totaled 47 kills on 100 attacks for a .410 percentage. Alli Pierce led UMHB with 23 assists while Maddison Heibel added 18. Defensively, Maddie Gillispie was the leader with 12 digs followed by Frasca with 11 and Pierce with 10. UMHB limited the Lobos to a .153 percentage in the match with 60 total digs and five blocks.
 
Frasca and Janikula each served 4-0 runs for the Cru as UMHB took the first set 25-21. The Cru took another 25-20 win in the second before opening the third set with six unanswered points. UMHB finished the Lobos off with a 25-15 win in the final set. Frasca led the Cru with 10 kills while Janikula added eight. Kylie Metcalf and Corinne Novak each had six kills as UMHB hit .289 in the match. Pierce was the offensive leader with 22 assists followed by Heibel with 16. Janikula and Gillispie were the defensive leaders for UMHB. Janikula led the Cru with six blocks while Gillispie had 12 digs. UMHB totaled eight team blocks and 51 digs, limiting the Lobos to an .084 percentage with just 31 kills.

The Cru returns to action in an Abilene road trip next weekend. UMHB will play Hardin-Simmons University on Friday March 19th and McMurry University on Saturday, March 20th.
