ABILENE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team earned a pair of 3-0 wins over Hardin-Simmons University Friday evening in Belton. UMHB improved to 11-1 on the season while the Cowgirls fell to 1-11 overall.
UMHB jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first set and did not trail, cruising to a 25-14 win in the first. Hardin-Simmons fought back in the second, but kills from
Kate Myles and
Hannah Frasca and an attack error by the Cowgirls ended the set in a 25-22 UMHB win. The third set of the match saw eight tied scored. UMHB pulled away from a 17-17 knot to take the final set 25-20 and win the match 3-0. Myles led the Cur with 10 kills while
Kylie Metcalf added six.
Alli Pierce anchored UMHB's offense with 17 assists followed by
Maddison Heibel with 13. UMHB totaled 39 kills on 131 total attacks for a .229 percentage in the match. Defensively,
Hannah Frasca led with 17 digs followed by
Maddie Gillispie with 16 and Pierce with 13. UMHB limited the Cowgirls to a .163 hitting percentage in the match with four total blocks and 71 digs.
The Cru opened the second match with an 11-5 lead by the Cowgirls cut that lead to just one point late in the set. UMHB rallied with kills from
Corinne Novak, Metcalf and
Kayla Janikula to take a 25-22 first-set win.
Sarah Grace Merry served eight consecutive points to open the second set as UMHB cruised to a 25-14 win. The Cru closed out the match and finished the sweep with a 25-21 win in the third. Frasca and Metcalf led the Cru with eight kills each while
Mattison Doffitt added seven. Pierce and Heibel recorded 12 assists each as UMHB hit .189 in the match. Gillispie was the defensive leader with nine digs, followed by Frasca with eight. UMHB limited the Cowgirls to an .083 percentage in the second match.
The Cru returns to action in a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 20
th at McMurry University in Abilene.
