BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team capped a game two comeback with a walk-off double as the Cru earned a doubleheader split with Sul Ross State Thursday in Belton. UMHB won game two 5-4 after falling 6-2 in the opener. The Cru is now 10-11 overall and 3-8 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. The Lobos move to 6-14 overall and 3-11 in the ASC on the year.
The Cru scored three runs in the final two innings to walk off with a 5-4 win in game two. The Lobos took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first two innings.
Hunter Jones singled home a run in the bottom of the second and
Jeb Zolman doubled home the tying run in the bottom of the third. Sul Ross took advantage of two UMHB errors to take a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth.
Daylon Nebgen tied it up at four with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth.
Dawson Shibley was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the seventh with one out and
Caimyn Holiday drove him in with a game-winning double down the left field line to end it. Holiday and
Malek Bolin had two hits apiece for the Cru.
Anthony Tovar picked up the win in relief to move to 1-1 on the season. Jorge Marquez and Isaac Aleman had two hits apiece for Sul Ross and Justin Holt (1-2) took the loss for the Lobos.
UMHB let a late lead slip away and fell 6-2 in nine innings in game one. The Cru scored on a throwing error and Jones' RBI single in the bottom of the second to grab a 2-0 lead. The Lobos got a run back on Ashton Leech's sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth to cut it to 2-1. It would stay that way into the top of the seventh when Jalen Benton lofted one over the leftfield wall for a solo homer to tie the game and send it to extra innings. Sul Ross would put four runs on the board in the top of the ninth inning to get the victory. Isaiah Moya (2-2) retired 24 of the last 25 hitters he faced in a complete-game, three-hitter for the Lobos.
Trevor Ripke took the loss for UMHB to drop to 1-4 despite giving up just two earned runs.
The two teams will close out the series with a 1 pm single game on Friday. UMHB will then travel to San Antonio to take on Trinity University in a non-conference game Tuesday night.
