RICHARDSON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team saw its season come to an end with two losses on the second day of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Friday in Richardson. The Cru fell to UT Dallas in a winner's bracket game before falling to Concordia Texas in an elimination contest.
Missed opportunities proved costly in a 5-4 loss to tournament host UT Dallas to open the day. UMHB left the bases loaded in the top of the second inning, but would get runs across in the top of the next inning.
Malek Bolin blasted a two-run homer just inside of the foul pole down the leftfield line to give the Cru a 2-0 lead. UMHB would leave two more runners on base in the top of the fourth and the UT Dallas bats came to life in the bottom of that inning. The Comets strung together five hits to push across four runs for a 4-2 lead. The Cru left two more runners on base in the top of the sixth inning.
Caimyn Holiday scored on a passed ball in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3, but UMHB left two runners in scoring position.
Dawson Shibley singled home
Ryan Farmer with two out in the top of the eighth to even the game at 4-4, but the Cru again left two runners in scoring position. The Comets retook the lead on a suicide squeeze bunt by Marcos Villegas in the bottom of the eighth. The Cru put the tying run on base in the top of the ninth but could not get a run across as Orion Drymond notched his fourth save of the year for UTD to send UMHB into an elimination game against Concordia Texas.
Jeb Zolman threw a complete-game, eight-hitter for the Cru but fell to 2-4 on the season. Zolman struck out five and walked just one. Shibley, Farmer,
Hunter Jones and
Kaden deBerardinis all had two hits apiece for UMHB, but the Cru left 12 runners on base in the contest. Ben Soule (2-0) earned the win for the Comets and Jacob Perry and Dylan Moreno had two hits apiece for UT Dallas.
UMHB could not generate enough offense to overcome an early deficit in a 6-1 loss to Concordia in that elimination game. The Tornados jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Concordia scored a single run in the bottom of the second and added two more runs in the bottom of the third. Farmer's RBI groundout put UMHB on the board and cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning. Concordia added a two-run triple in the bottom of that frame to push the lead back out to 5-1. The Cru loaded the bases in the top of the eighth but could not cut into the lead. The Tornados added a run in the bottom of the eighth for a 6-1 advantage and UMHB could not answer in the final at bat. Holiday had three of the Cru's nine hits in the game and
Trevor Ripke took the loss to drop to 3-5 on the season. Otto Franz picked up the win for Concordia and four different players has two hits apiece.
UMHB finishes the season with a 22-17 overall record. The win total matches the Cru's highest single-season total since 2017 and the program also advanced to the ASC Championship Tournament for the first time since that 2017 campaign. UMHB's win over Concordia on Thursday was the first postseason win for Cru baseball since 2014.
