LONGVIEW, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team extended its win streak to 10-0 with a 3-1 win over LeTourneau University Saturday afternoon in Longview.
UMHB went on a 4-0 run early in the first set to lead the YellowJackets by four and closed the set with a 10-3 run, starting the match with a 25-17 first-set win. LeTourneau mirrored that in the second, using a 5-0 run to gain advantage and closing the set with a 7-2 run to win 25-17.
"Set two was just not great on our part," Head Coach Mark Pryor said. "But we rebounded in the third set and really rediscovered our identity."
UMHB responded with a 25-12 win in the third set but the YellowJackets fought back, keeping the fourth set within three points early on. UMHB went on a 6-1 run halfway through to lead by four and finished with a 5-1 surge to seal the Cru's 10th win of the season.
"Set four was great for us," Pryor added. They tied it at 20 and it was a great opportunity for us to work on finishing."
Kayla Janikula led the Cru with 19 kills while Hannah Frasca added 11. UMHB hit 55 kills on 172 total attacks in the match. Alli Pierce anchored UMHB's offense with 45 assists. Pierce and Frasca both recorded double-doubles with Pierce totaling 18 digs and Frasca adding 19. Maddie Gillispie was the Cru's defensive leader with 20 digs while Alyssa Christiansen added 17 and Sarah Grace Merry had 12. UMHB recorded six team blocks in the match, led by Lauren Williams, Merry and Kylie Metcalf with three each.
LeTourneau totaled 50 kills on 183 attacks for a .169 percentage. The YellowJackets had 89 digs and 12 team blocks in the match.
"This is a tough road weekend for any team in the ASC. Both of these teams are great upper-level programs. For us to play successfully on the road at these two locations is a big step for our program."
UMHB returns to action on Tuesday, September 21st in a non-conference match at Schreiner University in Kerrville. The Cru returns to Belton on Saturday, September 24th in a 6 p.m. match against Concordia University Texas.
