Volleyball edges East Texas Baptist in five

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's volleyball team defeated East Texas Baptist University in five sets Friday night in Belton. The Cru improved to 15-6 overall and 8-4 in league play while the loss dropped the Tigers to 14-5 on the season and 6-5 in American Southwest Conference action.
 
The first set remained within three points until the 13-13 mark when the Tigers used an 8-1 run to cruise to the 25-20 victory. Second-set action saw three lead changes before UMHB pulled away with a 5-1 run to secure the 25-21 victory.
 
The third set did not see a lead larger than three. The Cru gained a 16-14 advantage after back-to-back blocks by Dravyn Hurd and Katie Warden and stayed on the high ground, claiming the 25-23 win. The fourth set saw 10 lead changes before ETBU took the 27-25 victory to force a fifth set. The final set consisted of back-and-forth action, but the Cru capitalized on two late blocks by Jenci Seahorn and Warden to claim the match with a 15-12 victory.
 
Hannah Frasca led the Cru recording 27 kills with no errors, hitting .375 percent on the night. Kaylie Vasil had 15 kills while Warden added 13 to UMHB's 73 total. The Cru offense was anchored by Ella Brunson with 64 assists. Defensively, UMHB out-blocked the Tigers 12-2, led by Warden with seven. Alyssa Christiansen led the Cru with 35 digs while Frasca added 18 and Brunson totaled 17.
 
The Cru returns to action Friday, October 21st in a 6:00 p.m. match against LeTourneau University in Longview.
