MARSHALL, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team went on the road for another American Southwest Conference win, beating East Texas Baptist University 24-7 Saturday in Marshall. The win improved the Cru to 5-1 on the season and 4-0 in American Southwest Conference action while the Tigers fell to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in league play.
UMHB drove 60 yards on 11 plays in the opening drive, but a missed field goal left the game scoreless. A trio of combined punts for both teams held the knot until the 2:04 mark in the first quarter when
Kyle King found
Jamaal Hamilton for 13 yards and the first score of the game.
The Cru forced another punt on the Tigers' next possession and drove 61 yards for another score with King completing his second touchdown pass of the day to
K.J. Miller. East Texas Baptist mounted a strong response but
Tristan Green put the Cru on the high ground once again with an interception at the ETBU 37-yard line. Kenneth Miller Jr. got the Cru in the red zone on the next play with a 17-yard rush and UMHB capitalized five plays later with a one-yard touchdown punch for a three-score lead.
Anthony Avila kicked a 36-yard field goal at the end of the third quarter to tack on three more points for the Cru. Devian Wilson responded for the Tigers, catching a six-yard touchdown pass from Cornelius Banks to put ETBU on the board at 12:10 in the fourth. UMHB's defense held on the Tigers' next drive, securing the 24-7 victory.
King completed 22 of 35 passes for 211 yards and two scores.
K.J. Miller led the Cru with six receptions for 26 yards, followed by
Jerry Day, Jr.,
Jamaal Hamilton and
Jerry Cephus all with two catches each.
Aphonso Thomas was the Cru's ground leader, totaling 84 yards on 16 attempts while Cormier added 41 yards and
Kenneth Miller, Jr. put up 30.
Durand Hill led the defensive efforts with 10 total tackles in the game.
Omari Frazier added nine takedowns with 1.5 tackles for loss while
Johnny Smith-Rider totaled eight tackles and four tackles for loss. Sante Parker Jr. was the leader at the line, ending the game with four tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and one quarterback hurry.
Avila finished his day with three extra-point kicks and a field goal while
Kenneth Miller, Jr. led the return game, totaling 56 yards on two kickoff returns.
UMHB returns to action Saturday, October 15
th in a 1 p.m. contest at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin.
