Football beats Texas Lutheran 45-16

SEGUIN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team earned its second consecutive road win in a 45-16 decision at Texas Lutheran University Saturday afternoon in Seguin. The win improved the Cru to 6-1 on the season and 4-0 in American Southwest Conference action while the Bulldogs fell to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in league play.
 
Texas Lutheran opened the game with an eight-play, 70-yard drive to take a lead on the Cru. Cole Andrus caught a six-yard pass from Seth Cosme for the Bulldog advantage. The Bulldogs had less than two minutes to enjoy that lead before the Cru went on to score five unanswered touchdowns in the first half.
 
K.J. Miller capped a four-play, 81-yard drive with a 65-yard touchdown pass from King for a 7-6 UMHB lead. Matthew Jackson followed that with a 95-yard punt return for touchdown, breaking the UMHB record for longest punt return by five yards. Brandon Jordan followed that with a diving catch from King in the end zone for a two score lead before Jamaal Hamilton caught King's third touchdown pass of the quarter for 24 yards and the score.
 
Kenneth Cormier, Jr. finished first-half scoring for the Cru, punching in a one-yard run for the 35-6 lead.             UMHB totaled 30 plays for 246 yards in the first half with King completing 13 passes for 220 yards and three scores. The Cru limited the Bulldogs to just 120 yards offensively on 32 total plays with just one score.
 
Texas Lutheran's offense drove in the second half. The Bulldogs kicked a field goal with 3:13 left in the third quarter to cut the deficit before Anthony Avila responded with a 22-yarder for the Cru. Both teams added fourth-quarter scores with Joshua Muncrief catching a 20-yard pass for the Bulldogs and K.J. Miller snatching another touchdown for UMHB.
 
UMHB averaged 6.8 yards per play with 415 total yards of offense. King completed 28 passes for 337 yards and four touchdowns in the game while K.J. Miller led the Cru with 128 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Brandon Jordan caught a team-high eight catches with one touchdown while Kenneth Cormier, Jr. had a team-high 31 rushing yards and a score.
 
Durand Hill led the Cru with 10 tackles while Trey Witcher added eight tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack and one forced fumble. UMHB totaled 11 tackles for loss in the contest with four sacks and three forced fumbles. Witcher, Johnny Smith-Rider and Mason Cavness all forced fumbles while Tommy Bowden had one fumble recovery and one interception.
 
King averaged 48.5 yards over a pair of punts while Anthony Avila went 7-for-7 with six extra-point kicks and a field goal.
 
UMHB returns to action Saturday, October 22nd in a 1 p.m. contest against Sul Ross State University at Crusader Stadium in Belton.
