C H A M P I O N S ! Football rolls past McMurry in 62-3 win for sole conference championship

BELTON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team earned a 62-3 win over McMurry University to win the program's 18th American Southwest Conference title Saturday at Crusader Stadium. The win improved the Cru to 9-1 on the season and 8-0 in American Southwest Conference action while the War Hawks ended their season at 1-9 overall and 1-7 in league play.
 
UMHB opened the game with four consecutive scoring drives. The Cru drove 34 yards on five plays in the first drive, capping that with a 42-yard field goal from Anthony Avila. Kyle King scored on the next drive with a four-yard rush before connecting with Brandon Jordan for a 16-yard touchdown and a 17-0 lead. Avila added another field goal at the 5:45 mark in the second quarter for a 20-0 advantage.
 
Caden Steubing was the next Crusader to score, recovering a bad long snap in the end zone for a 27-0 advantage. UMHB totaled 208 yards of offense in the first half, limiting the War Hawks to just 36 yards on 29 total offensive plays.
 
The Cru scored 21 more unanswered points in the third quarter. Kyle King connected with K.J. Miller for a two-yard pass before Kenneth Cormier, Jr. added another score on a two-yard punch. Chaka Watson added seven more points on the scoreboard, running an interception back 51 yards for the score.
 
UMHB added two more fourth-quarter scores on a 56-yard rush from Kenneth Miller, Jr. and a three-yard punch from Montana Miller. McMurry got on the scoreboard with 8:07 left in the contest on a 39-yard field goal, ending the game in a 62-3 UMHB win.
 
King completed 17 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns while Jackson Tingler added two completions. Kenneth Miller, Jr. totaled 88 yards on five rushes, followed by Cormier with 67 yards and Montana Miller with 38. K.J. Miller was the Cru's leading receiver with 69 yards, followed by Brandon Jordan with 68. Both Miller and Jordan caught touchdowns in the game as well.
 
Titus Dunk led the Cru with six tackles and one tackle for loss, followed by Durand Hill and Omari Frazier with five tackles each. Sante Parker, Jr. added one sack and 2.5 tackles for loss while Mason Cavness forced one fumble. The Crusader defense also limited the War Hawks to -8 yards in the rushing game. 
 
Anthony Avila went 2-for-2 in field goals with a 42-yarder and a 28-yarder while K.J. Miller led the return game with 31 yards.
 
UMHB returns to action in the 2022 NCAA Division III Football Playoffs next week. The Cru will learn their postseason fate in the NCAA Selection Show scheduled for Sunday, November 13th at 4 p.m. on ncaa.com.
