LONGVIEW, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team claimed an 86-73 road win over LeTourneau University Thursday evening in Longview. The Cru improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in American Southwest Conference play while the YellowJackets fell to 3-5 on the season and 0-3 in league play.
UMHB jumped to a quick 7-1 lead before the YellowJackets used an eight-point run to knot-up the contest 13-13 at the 14:48 mark. The Cru then used an eight-point run followed by a six-point run to create an advantage as big as nine with nine minutes left on the clock. UMHB kept pushing to take the lead to 12 after a quick five points from
Gibson Hearne. The YellowJackets capitalized on points in the paint in the final three minutes to cut the gap down to five going into halftime.
The second half opened in even play until the 14:53 mark when
Josiah Johnson sparked an 8-2 run. The Cru continued to expand their lead to 17 with a six-point run by
Ty Prince followed by a
Luke Feely layup with 10 minutes remaining. The YellowJackets answered with a 12-2 run to cut the gap to seven. UMHB went back up by double-digits with 2:14 left to play and held on to that advantage for the 86-73 win.
Ty Prince led the Cru with 28 points followed by
Josiah Johnson with 26.
Luke Feely added 12 points in the contest as UMHB shot 60.8 percent in the contest. Prince also led the Cru's rebounding game with nine total boards followed by
Gibson Hearne with six.
Kyle Wright added a team-high three steals while Prince and Johnson each added three assists.
UMHB totaled 34 points in the paint with 14 points off turnovers and eight second-chance points. The Cru allowed the YellowJacket bench just four total points and limited them to a 49.1 shooting percentage in the contest
UMHB returns to action Saturday, December 10
th in a 3 p.m. contest at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall.
