Football sails past the Pirates

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team honored former head coach Pete Fredenburg Saturday night with a renaming of the field at Crusader Stadium and a 68-14 win over the Southwestern Pirates. UMHB improved to 2-1-0 on the season and opened American Southwest Conference play with a 1-0 record while the Pirates dropped to 1-2 overall.
 
UMHB scored less than three minutes into action with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Kyle King to K.J. Miller. Aphonso Thomas was the next Crusader to score, running in from 65 yards out for six more points. The Cru added one more score in the first quarter with a 30-yard touchdown pass from King to Jerry Day, Jr. to put the Cru up by 21. UMHB added four more scores in the second quarter with touchdown grabs from Will McClintock, Brandon Jordan, K.J. Miller and Jerry Day, Jr. Kyle King tied his school record for touchdown passes in a game with six in the first half.
 
Day, Jr. caught another touchdown pass from Jackson Tingler to open the third quarter before Southwestern got on the board with 2:32 left in that frame. Kenneth Miller, Jr. scored next with a 70-yard rush with 2:06 left in the third before Markeith Miller ran in 15 yards for the Cru's final touchdown at 12:43 in the fourth. Southwestern scored one more touchdown to end the game with a 68-14 UMHB win.
 
King completed 11 of 18 passes for 298 yards and six scores while Jackson Tingler completed four passes for 52 yards and a score. The duo also tied the UMHB team record for passing touchdowns in a game with seven. Day, Jr. led the Cru with three catches for 111 yards and three scores while K.J. Miller finished with three catches for 106 yards and a pair of scores. Thomas led the Cru's ground game, totaling 92 yards and a score while Kenneth Miller, Jr. and Montana Miller both added touchdowns. UMHB totaled 51 plays for 633 yards in the contest.
 
Durand Hill, Trey Belyeu-Witcher and Johnny Smith-Rider led the Cru with six tackles each. Smith-Rider recorded a team-high three tackles for loss while Titus Dunk created the Cru's turnover with an interception and 41-yard return. UMHB limited the Pirates to 311 offensive yards with just 123 yards on the ground.
 
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, September 24th in a 6 p.m. match at No. 6 Hardin-Simmons in Abilene.
