BELTON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team held on for a 65-57 win over Concordia University Texas Saturday afternoon in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 13-4 on the season and 8-2 in American Southwest Conference action while the Tornados fell to 7-9 overall and 4-6 in league play.
UMHB opened the game with a 5-2 lead and held advantage until 3:11 in the first quarter. The Tornados led by as many as five in the final three minutes, going into halftime up 14-11.
Arieona Rosborough led the Cru with four points in the quarter while five Crusaders contributed to the point total.
Rosborough put the Cru on top again with a pair of foul shots early in the second quarter. UMHB extended the lead to six with a three-pointer from
Catalina Cortez at 5:37 and held onto advantage through the quarter. UMHB shot 25.7 in the first half with 10 points in the paint and 10 points from the bench.
The Cru continued advantage through the third quarter, extending to a double-digit lead at 4:36. The Tornados fought back late in the quarter with Madi Maxwell scoring three points in the final 0.7 seconds to cut the lead to five.
Concordia Texas kept the lead in single digits through the final quarter. The game played the final 3:36 with neither team scoring a field goal. Chelsea Cogburn hit a pair of foul shots to cut the gap to one before Rosborough netted two for the Cru. The Tornados inbounded the ball with 39.1 seconds left but
Ashley Faux stole the ball, giving UMHB possession.
Lauren Baker made a pair of foul shots at 21.1 to give UMHB a five-point lead. Rosborough and UMHB's defense did not allow Concordia to inbound the ball after the foul shots, giving UMHB possession again with 19 seconds left to play. Baker made two more shots at the line, putting the Cru up 64-57 with 15 seconds to play and added one more at 4.2 seconds to seal the 65-57 win.
Rosborough led the Cru with 19 points while
Payton Hicks and
Ashley Faux each added 10. UMHB shot 31.8 percent in the contest with 21 field goals.
Jaycie Brisco scored a team-high nine rebounds while Rosborough added eight. Brisco also had a team-high four steals and three assists.
UMHB closes out the five-game home stand next week. The Cru hosts East Texas Baptist University at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 26
th before taking on LeTourneau on Saturday, January 28
th at 1:00 p.m.
