Volleyball sweeps Hardin-Simmons

ABILENE, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team swept Hardin-Simmons University 3-0 Saturday afternoon in Abilene. The win improved the Cru to 23-1 overall and 12-1 in American Southwest Conference action while the Cowgirls fell to 10-12 overall and 6-6 in league play.
 
Hardin-Simmons opened the first set with a point but UMHB quickly took a 4-1 lead. The Cowgirls fought back, bringing the match within one before UMHB pulled ahead with a 5-1 run to lead at 12-7, cruising to a 25-20 first-set win from there.
 
The second set played back-and-forth until UMHB scored five unanswered points for a 10-5 lead. UMHB held the high ground through the duration of the set for a 25-18 second-set win.
 
Hardin-Simmons opened the third set with a 5-1 lead and held the lead until the Cru tied the set at 19-19. The Cowgirls scored the next two points to go ahead again but UMHB responded with a four-point run to take a 23-21 lead. Hardin-Simmons scored two more points but UMHB held on for the 25-23 win.
 
Hannah Frasca led the Cru with 10 kills while Kendall Harrington added eight. UMHB totaled 38 kills in the match, anchored by Harrington with 16 total assists. Caiden Lasala was the Cru's defensive leader, totaling 15 digs while Harrington and Maddie Gillispie each added 14.
 
UMHB returns to action on Tuesday, October 24th in a 6 p.m. match against Concordia University Texas. The match will honor those who have and are currently fighting cancer during the annual Dig Pink game.
