CONWAY, Arkansas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team earned sweeps over Hendrix College and Centenary College in Conway on Sunday afternoon. UMHB improved to 11-1 on the season.
UMHB swept Hendrix 3-0 in their first match of the day. The Cru jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first set before the Warriors tied it up 9-9. UMHB responded with a 9-2 point run to hold the lead and claim a 25-21 win.
The second set played close, seeing four even scores before the Cru used five unanswered points to go up 8-4. The Warriors used a 7-1 run to reclaim their lead at 17-14. Their lead held until the Cru used a trio of kills followed by a trio of Warrior errors to go ahead 24-22. Hendrix scored two more points before the Cru closed the set 26-24. The Warriors held the high ground through the final set until the Cru scored five unanswered points to take a 10-9 lead. UMHB continued to pull away with a 6-2 run and cruised to a 25-21 victory.
Kendall Harrington led the Cru with 12 kills, hitting at a .478 percentage. The UMHB offense was anchored by Ella Brunson with 14 assists. The Cru totaled 36 digs, led by Peyton Sedlacek with nine.
The Cru earned their second sweep of the day against Centenary. UMHB opened play against the Ladies with four unanswered points. Centenary held a brief lead at 6-5 but the Cru responded with a duo of four-point runs to go up by six. The Ladies brought the set back within two, but UMHB remained steady, taking a 25-19 first set win. The Cru jumped to a quick 9-4 lead in the second set. UMHB expanded the gap to as large as nine and cruised to a 25-19 victory.
UMHB went on a 5-1 run to start the final set before the Ladies brought it within one at the 11-10 mark. UMHB responded with four and three point runs to lead 21-12. The Ladies made a final effort, going on a seven-point run to cut the gap 22-20. The Cru held onto the lead and finished the sweep with a 25-23 win.
Katie Warden led the Cru with 14 kills on a .367 hitting percentage, while Natalie Hughes added 10 to UMHB's 49 total. The Cru offense was anchored by Brunson with 26 assists. Defensively, Sedlacek led with 14 digs while Brunson added 12 and Maddie Gillispie totaled 10.
UMHB returns to action Friday, September 22nd in a 6:00 p.m. contest against Hardin-Simmons University in Belton.
