Softball completes series sweep over UT Dallas

BELTON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team completed the series sweep against UT Dallas Saturday afternoon in Belton. The Cru improved to 16-12 on the season and 10-8 in American Southwest Conference action while the Comets fell to 15-14 overall and 6-9 in ASC play. 

UMHB opened the contest with a three-up, three-down first frame highlighted by a throwdown at second from catcher Tori Skinner. The Cru got on the board in the bottom of the first with a bases-loaded RBI single from Taylor Henken to drive in Shorey Nguyen for the 1-0 lead.

UMHB went ahead 2-0 in the second inning with a run from Eileigh Whyte on an error. The Comets cut the margin to one in the fourth with an RBI triple from Cole Johnson. UMHB responded with perfect innings in the fifth and sixth to hold the lead before using back-to-back flyouts in the seventh frame to claim the 2-1 win. 

Eileigh Whyte (11-5) earned the win for UMHB, pitching all seven innings with just one run on six hits with five strikeouts. The Cru totaled eight hits, led by Henken and Whyte with two hits each. 

"I was coming in strong" said Whyte. "I knew it was going to be a tough one but I knew I had a team to back me up."

The Cru also played hosted its inaugural Strikeout Cancer game in honor of Cru Softball alum Emily Bounds, as well as those who have fought and are currently fighting cancer. UMHB returns to action on April 19th-20th in a three-game series against University of the Ozarks in Clarksville.
