Softball sweeps doubleheader over Sul Ross State

BELTON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept a doubleheader against Sul Ross State University Friday afternoon in Belton. The Cru improved to 21-12 on the season while the Lobos fell to 14-20.

UMHB opened game one with two three-up, three-down innings with Eileigh Whyte in the circle. The Cru got on the board in the bottom of the second frame with a three-RBI single from Bailey Eggleston to score Taylor Henken, Allyse Castillo and Tori Skinner. The Lobos cut the margin to two, scoring on an error in the third.

UMHB continued their explosive offense in the third inning, adding three more runs. Bailey Frenzel got scoring started with a solo homerun. Henken followed with an RBI single to left field to score Bryton Wright before Lindsey Polleschultz doubled to drive in Castillo for the 6-1 lead. 

SRSU added two more runs in the fourth inning, but the Cru responded right back with a Henken RBI double to score Kylie Green in the bottom of the frame. In the next inning, Skinner was brought home on an error followed by a Frenzel RBI single to score Polleschultz and earn the Cru the 11-3 run-rule walk-off win. 

UMHB outhit the Lobos 11-5, led by Henken with three hits and two RBI. Eileigh Whyte (14-5) earned the win for the Cru, throwing 4.2 innings with two earned runs on five hits. Carmen Vela pitched relief, throwing the final out. 

The Lobos took an early lead in game two, scoring on a steal in the first inning. UMHB added the equalizer on a Henken RBI single to bring Lindsey Polleschultz home in the bottom of the first.

UMHB took a 2-1 lead in the third frame with a Bailey Eggleston triple to drive in Kyler Sanders before a ground out scored Eggleston. The Lobos cut the gap back to one in the top of the third on a sacrifice flyout. 

UMHB pulled away 5-2 in the third with a duo of RBI singles from Sanders and Polleschultz to score Green and Castillo. The Cru continued on in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homerun from Green followed by a steal to home from Kaitlin Powers. 

The Lobos fought back in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs to cut the gap 7-5. UMHB held SRSU through the final two innings to earn the 7-5 win. 

UMHB outhit the Lobos again 11-7, led by Henken with three. Carmen Vela (1-0) earned the win for the Cru, throwing four innings with one earned run on three hits. Chloee Mason pitched the final three innings, allowing one earned run on four hits. 

UMHB returns to action on Saturday, April 27th at noon to complete a series against Sul Ross State University. The Cru will also honor the senior class of 2024 at the conclusion of the contest.
