BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team dropped a two-point decision to Concordia University Texas Saturday in Belton. The loss dropped the Cru to 2-5 on the season while the Tornados went to 1-4.
The first quarter of action played scoreless until the 6:34 mark when
Amari Welch broke the drought with a three-pointer. UMHB tacked on another one 32 seconds later and the game went scoreless again until the Tornados finally got on the board with a jumper at 3:13. Shanna Brown pulled Concordia Texas within one but a make behind the arc from
Amillion Fowler put the Cru back up by five. UMHB held the high ground for the rest of the quarter, going into the second frame up 14-10.
The Tornados answered in the second, tying the contest at 18 with 4:35 remaining. The game toggled in back-and-forth action for the rest of the quarter with CTX taking a three-point lead into halftime. Fowler led the Cru with six points in the first half, followed by Welch and
Natalia Galvan each with three.
Fowler opened the third quarter with another three-pointer but the Tornados quickly answered, taking the lead back at 26-25. UMHB held another short lead before CTX took over again, holding the high ground until the 56-second mark when
Amari Welch hit a foul shot to knot the contest at 37.
Natalia Galvan hit a three-pointer at 00:19 to give UMHB a 40-37 lead headed into the final quarter.
Fourth-quarter play went back-and-forth with a 56-56 tie with 44.7 remaining. Sam Isang made a free throw at 30 to put the Tornados on top. Aja Holmes added another free throw for the Tornados as a last-ditch shot fell short for the Cru, ending the game in a 58-56 win for the Tornados.
Fowler led the Cru with 17 points while Okoye added 11. Fowler was also the Cru's rebound leader with nine while Okoye added five assists and four steals.
UMHB returns to action on Sunday, November 30
th in a 3 p.m. contest against Texas Lutheran University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
