BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team fell to Emory University 80-59 Sunday afternoon in Belton. The loss dropped the Cru to 0-2 on the season while the Eagles improved to 2-0.
UMHB jumped to a 5-0 lead early and extended that lead to back to six before the Eagles mounted a comeback, pulling the quarter within three at the 3:05 mark. The Cru scored five unanswered points but the Eagles answered with a three-pointer to close the first quarter at 18-13.
Emory took its first lead of the day at 5:13 in the second quarter off a three-pointer from Mia Strazza and extended the lead to eight points. UMHB answered with a jumper from
Karlee Cronk but the Eagles added two more jumpers for a double-digit margin.
Josie Bruder hit a shot at 2:04 for the Cru but UMHB was held scoreless for the duration of the quarter, going into halftime down 38-24.
The Eagles outscored the Cru 21-11 in the third frame but UMHB answered in the fourth, outscoring Emory 24-11. UMHB wasn't able to overcome the deficit from the second and third quarters, ending the game in an 80-59 Eagle win.
Josie Bruder led the Cru with 18 points while
Rachel Okoye added 11. Okoye also had a team-high three assists and eight rebounds while Bruder and
Karlee Cronk each added five boards.
UMHB returns to action on Friday, November 14
th at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College in Claremont, California.
