BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team defeated Schreiner University 63-53 Wednesday evening in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 4-5 on the season.
UMHB jumped to an early 6-0 lead but the Mountaineers fought back, pulling within two at the 6:41 mark. A jumper from
Rachel Okoye moved the game back to two possessions before Brie Sosa answered with a Schreiner three-pointer, cutting the gap to one. Sosa hit another three-pointer at 4:06 to tie the contest at 12.
Katelen Brooks hit a jumper for UMHB before another SU three-pointer gave the Mountaineers a 15-14 lead at 3:28. The quarter played scoreless until the 1:17 mark when Okoye made a pair of foul shots to end the frame in a 16-15 UMHB lead.
The Cru extended the lead to five points early in the second quarter but Schreiner continued to press, pulling within two multiple times. UMHB closed the quarter on a 4-0 run to end the first half with a 34-28 lead.
Amillion Fowler led the Cru with 13 points in the half, followed by Okoye with eight.
UMHB opened the third quarter with seven unanswered points, forcing Schreiner to call a time out. The Cru stayed on top for the duration of the frame, going into the fourth with a 53-41 lead. Schreiner fought back late in the half but UMHB held on for the 63-53 win.
Amillion Fowler finished with a double-double, scoring 22 points with 11 rebounds. Okoye added 12 points in the contest while
Natalia Galvan and
Amari Welch each added eight. Welch also had a team-high five steals with
Karlee Cronk adding seven rebounds and three assists. UMHB totaled 38 points in the paint with 17 points off turnovers and 16 second-chance points.
UMHB returns to action on Wednesday, December 10
th in a 5 p.m. contest at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin.
