AUSTIN, Texas – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball fell to Concordia University Texas in a ten-inning 3-2 ball game on Tuesday night. The loss drops the Cru's overall record to 3-2, while the Tornados improve to 8-2 on the season.
Alejandro Sanchez III was the first to find action on the field, earning a walk and stealing before getting left on to end the half inning.
James McGlumphy got the start on the mound for the Cru, forcing three pop flies to get out of the one-hit first inning. Jasson Hemmerling Jr. and
Easton Cline each added singles in the second but were unable to be pushed across the plate. Both teams remained scoreless through the third inning, with one strikeout added to McGlumphy's outing, along with a three-up, three-down finish to inning three.
The Tornados were the first on the board with a one-out solo homerun over left field in the bottom of the sixth inning. McGlumphy kept his composure, striking out the next batter and forcing a pop-up to get out of the inning. Jasson Hemmerling drew a walk in the top of the seventh, but the Cru was unable to respond to Concordia's run.
Nicklas Fenner entered the game to relieve McGlumphy on the mound with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, adding two strikeouts with one runner left on to close out the frame.
UMHB responded in the top of the eighth inning, kickstarted by a double from
Carson Hagan who then stole third.
Cameron Talburt singled through the left side to score Hagan and earn the Cru's first RBI of the night, knotting the game at one. Fenner followed his offense, forcing two pop-up outs and one strike out.
Tyler Betts entered the game to pinch hit, slicing a single to right field.
Shane Melick also got an appearance at the plate, drawing a walk to advance Betts into scoring position. A fielder's choice closed out the inning, sending the game to the bottom of the ninth with no more runs scored. Fenner pitched a shutout inning to close that frame and take the Cru to extra innings with the game tied at one.
With two outs in the tenth inning,
Cameron Talburt pushed a double to right field.
Alejandro Sanchez III earned an RBI infield single to send Talburt home and take the 2-1 lead, but cut the scoring there going into the bottom of the 10th. The Tornados responded with a double followed by a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner to third.
Jacob Haynes entered to pitch for the Cru with one out and a runner on third. Concordia was able to put a run on the board due to a wild pitch, knotting the game back up 2-2. The Tornados earned a triple, scoring on another wild pitch to take the extra-inning 3-2 win.
Cameron Talburt led the Cru with two clutch hits and one RBI on the night in five plate appearances.
Alejandro Sanchez III also added an RBI on one hit, with
Carson Hagan scoring one run.
James McGlumphy pitched 6.1 innings with three strikeouts.
Nicklas Fenner spent three complete innings on the mound striking out four with no walks.
Jacob Haynes closed out the game in the tenth inning.
