Baseball earns big win at Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball put up six scoring innings in a 12-8 win over Southwestern University Wednesday evening in Georgetown.  The win improved the Cru to 4-2 on the season while the Pirates fell to 3-3.

Carson Hagan opened the game with a home run over the right field wall, connecting on the first pitch for the score. Tyler Betts reached on a hit-by-pitch and stole second but the Cru wasn't able to bring him around, ending the inning with the solo run. Southwestern put a runner on in the bottom of the first but a solo double-play from Alejandro Sanchez III ended the threat.

Shane Melick opened the game with a triple and scored two batters later on an RBI single from Easton Cline. UMHB added one more run off a sacrifice fly from Hagan for a 3-0 lead. Southwestern added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning but the Cru quickly responded, scoring Riley Bender off an RBI single from Exavier Mendez before Mendez scored off an error for a 5-2 lead.

The Cru tacked on one more run in the fourth and that 6-2 lead held until the sixth inning. Jasson Hemmerling, Jr. and Easton Cline opened sixth with back-to-back walks before Cameron Talburt advanced both runners with a bunt single. Carson Hagan followed that with a bases-loaded walk to score Hemmerling. Riley Bender drove in two more runs with a long double to centerfield three batters later, putting UMHB up 9-2.

Southwestern tacked on three runs in the bottom of the sixth and two in the seventh to cut the gap to two runs. Exavier Mendez gave the Cru some insurance in the top of the eighth, slamming a two-RBI single to right field to extend the lead back to four. UMHB added one more run in the inning off an RBI single from Shane Melick.

Isaac Brann entered the game in the ninth, pitching out of a jam to secure the win for the Cru. Bender and Cline led the Cru with three hits each while Hagan had a team-high three RBI and Jesse Hemmerling and Cline each added two runs. Kolby McBee earned the win on the mound for the Cru, pitching three innings with just one hit allowed. UMHB threw a combined five pitchers in the contest. Kade Townsend took the loss for Southwestern, throwing two innings with three hits and three earned runs allowed.

UMHB continues action on Tuesday, March 4th in a 2 p.m. contest at Schreiner University in Kerrville.
