BELTON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team earned a come-from-behind 6-2 win over Southwestern University Wednesday evening in Georgetown. The win improved the Cru to 4-2 on the season while the Pirates fell to 5-7 overall.
Eileigh Whyte opened the game with three shutout innings in the circle. Southwestern put up single-run innings in the fourth and fifth frames for a 2-0 lead.
The Cru responded in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs to take the lead.
Bryton Wright opened the inning with a single before advancing on a walk earned by
Bailey Frenzel.
Shorey Nguyen followed with a fielder's choice that advanced Jolley, Frenzel's pinch runner, to second.
Madeline Stephenson followed that with a walk to load the bases, allowing
Gabriela Vela to double, scoring Nguyen and Jolley.
Kyler Sanders reached on an error that scored Vela and
Madeline Stephenson for the Cru's third and fourth runs.
UMHB tacked on two more runs in the seventh off a two-RBI double from Wright. Wright scored
Taylor Henken, who pinch ran for
Kylie Hoggatt after a single, and
Tori Skinner, who singled on a bunt. The Pirates got one baserunner on in the seventh but Whyte forced a popup to end the game with a Crusader win.
Wright and Nguyen led the Cru with two hits each while Wright, Vela and Sanders each recorded a team-high two RBI. Whyte earned the win in the circle, throwing seven innings with six hits and two runs allowed. Whyte struck out four of 29 batters faced in the contest, earning her second win of the season. UMHB finished with six runs on eight hits while the Pirates had two runs on six hits with one error.
UMHB returns to action on Friday, February 28
th in a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Dallas Christian College in Belton.
