Softball sweeps McMurry in doubleheader

BELTON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team earned two wins in a doubleheader against McMurry University Wednesday afternoon in Belton. The Cru won game one 3-0 and claimed the second game 8-1. These wins improve UMHB's record to 15-7 on the season while the Warhawks fall to 8-12.
 
Lindsey Polleschultz led off for the Cru with a first-pitch single to left field, following with a stolen base on Shorey Nguyen's at-bat. Bailey Frenzel scored Polleschultz on an RBI single to left, giving UMHB a quick 1-0 lead to close out the first inning. Starting pitcher Eileigh Whyte sat down the entire Warhawk lineup its first time around, tallying four strikeouts. The Cru added another run in the bottom of the fourth off a Taylor Henken RBI single to score Vic Shimabukuro. Henken tallied a second RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Madeline Stephenson to secure the UMHB 3-0 victory.
 
Taylor Henken led with two RBI, going two for three at the plate. Tori Skinner and Madeline Stephenson each also added two hits, while Stephenson had one run scored. The Cru added nine hits, five stolen bases, and recorded no errors. Starting pitcher Eileigh Whyte earned the win in the circle pitching six complete innings with two strikeouts. Alli Dafoe earned the save pitching one full inning.
 
 Kylie Hoggatt pushed the first run of game two across the plate in the bottom of the first, scoring Taylor Henken who got on with a single to the pitcher. The Crusaders had a big second inning, putting up five more runs to take the 6-0 lead. Madeline Stephenson and Jordan Iverson opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Gabriela Vela followed with one of her own, scoring Stephenson. Iverson scored on a wild pitch that secured a base on balls for Polleschultz. Henken went up to the plate, singling to right center to put two runners in scoring position. Polleschultz was able to steal home and was followed by a triple to left by Tori Skinner who was then pushed across the plate by a Kylie Hoggatt RBI single. Skinner hit a two-run homerun in the fourth inning to put the Cru up 8-0. The Warhawks responded in the top of the fifth inning with a solo homerun to cut into UMHB's lead 8-1. This rounded out the scoring for game two, securing the win for the Cru.
 
Tori Skinner went two for three at the plate with two RBI, a homerun, a triple, and two runs scored. Taylor Henken went two for two with an RBI and two stolen bases. Kylie Hoggatt and Madeline Stephenson also added two hits each. Chloee Miller earned the win for the Cru pitching a complete game with three strikeouts, only allowing four hits and giving up one run.
 
UMHB returns to action at home Saturday, March 29th in a 12:00pm doubleheader against LeTourneau University.
