ABILENE, Texas – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Women's Basketball dropped a six-point decision to Hardin-Simmons University Tuesday evening in Abilene. The loss dropped the Cru to 7-17 overall while the Cowgirls improved to 19-5.
UMHB jumped to an early lead in the first frame but the Cowgirls responded, tying the contest at 10 at 5:36 and taking the lead with a jumper 30 seconds later.
Amillion Fowler answered with a three-pointer to put the Cru back on top. The game went into scoreless action for two minutes until Savannah Bennett broke the drought for the Cowgirls, making a layup to put HSU back on top.
Rachel Okoye answered with back-to-back layups and UMHB held onto the lead, going into the second quarter with a 19-16 advantage.
Hardin-Simmons responded in the second frame, taking a one-point lead at 5:49 and staying on the high ground. UMHB closed the quarter with five unanswered to force a knotted 28-28 score at the half.
The Cru took over the lead in the third quarter, going ahead by five off a
Natalia Galvan three-pointer at 5:02. HSU pulled within one with just under three minutes in the frame and retook the lead with a layup at 2:34. UMHB quickly tied it but the Cowgirls answered with a trio of unanswered three-pointers to go ahead by nine.
UMHB pulled within three twice in the final quarter but couldn't catch up, ending the game in a 65-59 HSU win.
Okoye ended the game with a team-high 20 points, followed by
Natalia Galvan with 11.
Kayla Johns-McGarity brought down 13 rebounds with
Karlee Cronk added eight. Okoye and Cronk each added three assists in the match.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, February 21
st in a 1 p.m. match against Howard Payne University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
