Abilene, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team never could get its offense untracked as McMurry University shut the Cru down in a 69-39 loss Saturday afternoon in Abilene. The loss drops the UMHB women to 14-9 overall and 11-8 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. McMurry improves to 15-8 overall and 13-6 in the ASC on the year with the victory.
McMurry opened the game with a 7-0 run before
Caitlin Barganier finally put the Cru on the scoreboard with a pair of free throws at the 15:45 mark of the first half. UMHB battled back to cut the lead to two points at 12-10 with 13:15 left in the first half. McMurry then used a 9-0 run to push the lead back to double figures and the lead would be 42-22 at halftime. UMHB opened the scoring in the second half with a
Brittany Zamora jumper, but the Cru would not score again until
Cortney Poncik hit a three-pointer with 11:04 left to play. By that time, McMurry had built a 55-27 lead and the Cru would not get closer than 30 points the rest of the way.
Barganier led the Cru with 13 points and she was one of just three UMHB players to make more than one field goal in the game.
Landie Thompson and
Jovana Miles each had seven points for the Cru and Miles and
Jenny Black grabbed a team-best four rebounds apiece.
M.J. Vickers topped McMurry with 16 points and 12 rebounds, all of them on the offensive end. Keshia Collins added 13 points and Andi Lukaszewski added 11 points. Anna Berthel also grabbed 11 rebounds for McMurry.
The Cru shot just 25 per cent from the field in the game and only hit 21 per cent in the second half. UMHB also turned the ball over 24 times and was out rebounded 57-22 in the loss. McMurry shot 36 per cent for the game and went 7-17 from three-point range.
The Cru will close out the regular season next week. UMHB will travel to Kerrville to take on Schreiner University in a 5:30 PM tip-off next Thursday. The Cru will then return home for the regular season finale against Texas Lutheran University at 1:00 PM next Saturday. UMHB is currently tied for fourth place in the ASC West Division with Concordia Texas. The top four teams from the West Division will advance to the ASC Championship Tournament.
