Owings Mills, Maryland – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team battled back from a double-digit second-half deficit to send the game to overtime but the comeback fell just short in a 66-62 overtime loss to 11th-ranked Randolph-Macon Friday night in Maryland. The loss came at the Hoopsville National Invitational Tournament in Owings Mills and drops the Cru to 1-1 on the season. The Yellow Jackets improve to 2-1 on the year with the victory.
UMHB led just once in the first half at 13-12 and trailed 30-25 at halftime. Randolph-Macon stretched it to an 11-point lead at 52-41 with ten minutes remaining, but the Cru chipped away to cut it to 53-52 on Sidney Deloach's lay-up with 2:16 left in regulation. Chris Hamilton's basket gave the Yellow Jackets a 55-52 edge but Jerard Graham answered at the other end to close the gap to 55-54 with 1:08 to go. Connor Sullivan hit one of two free-throws with 24 seconds on the clock to make it a two-point game, but Deloach hit a lay-in off a great Layton Zinsmeister save to tie the game at 56 with nine seconds left. Russell Green blocked a Yellow Jacket shot in the final seconds to send it to overtime. A pair of free throws from Green would tie it with 1:20 remaining in the extra session, but Akeem Holmes converted a three-point play with 48 seconds to go to give Randolph-Macon a 65-62 lead. UMHB missed three shots with a chance to tie the game following a Yellow Jacket turnover and Randolph-Macon hit one more free throw in the final seconds.
Graham led the Cru with 19 points and he added five rebounds. Green added nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds. UMHB shot just 34 percent from the field and went 1-13 from three-point range in the loss. The Cru out rebounded Randolph-Macon 51-39 in the loss.
Hamilton topped the Yellow Jackets with 14 points and he hit 4-8 from three-point range. Sullivan added 13 points on 4-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Joe Hassell had a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Randolph-Macon shot 33 per cent from the field and went 11-28 from three-point range.
The Cru will close out the tournament with a 6:00 PM Eastern Time start against Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday. UMHB will then return home to host Southwestern University in the 2014 home opener on Monday, December 1st at 7:00 PM.
