Volleyball edges McMurry 3-2

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team used a fifth-set comeback to edge McMurry University 3-2 Tuesday evening in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 14-8 on the season while the War Hawks fell to 12-8 overall.  
 
McMurry jumped to an early 4-1 lead in the first set and did not trail, taking a 1-0 match advantage with a 25-22 first-set win. The War Hawks continued to dominate the second set before UMHB used a 5-0 run to gain momentum, evening the match with a 25-20 second-set win. The match's third set remained competitive until UMHB used a 5-1 run to gain a lead and took the set 25-17 for a 2-1 lead. McMurry mounted a comeback in the final points of the fourth set, grabbing a 29-27 victory. The War Hawks continued to take control of the fifth set, before UMHB used a 7-2 run to grab a 15-12 fifth-set victory and 3-2 match win.
 
Shelby Russell led the Cru with 20 kills while Natasha Evans had 17, Abby Voskuil added 16 and Cheyenne Dowdey had 13. Shelby Prather helped the Cru to a .328 percentage in the match, assisting 69 kills. Defensively, Jordan Yates led UMHB with 16 digs followed by Russell with 14 and Evans with 10. Dowdey led the defense at the line, recording two solo blocks and six block assists as UMHB recorded 12 team blocks. The Cru hit 80 kills on 174 total attacks with 23 errors while the War Hawks had 65 kills on 175 total attacks with 20 errors.
 
The Cru continues play Friday, October 23rd in a 7 p.m. match against Sul Ross State University and ends the regular-season home schedule on Saturday, October 24th in a 2 p.m. match against Howard Payne.
