Tournament Central PageRICHARDSON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team swept Hardin-Simmons University 3-0 Thursday in its first game of the 2015 American Southwest Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament. The win improves the Cru to 18-10 on the season and advances them in the winner's bracket of the tournament.
Hardin-Simmons opened the match winning the first two points, before
Shelby Russell served six straight points for an 8-2 UMHB lead in the first set. The Cru never looked back, winning consecutive 25-18, 25-17, 25-20 set wins for the 3-0 match victory.
Abby Voskuil led the Cru with 13 kills while Russell added 12 and
Natasha Evans had eight.
Shelby Prather helped the Cru to a .209 hitting percentage in the match, recording 36 assists for UMHB. Defensively for the Cru, Prather led with 13 digs while Voskuil added 12 and Evans and
Jordan Yates each added 11. At the line,
Maddie Frerich and
Cheyenne Dowdey led UMHB with three blocks each. UMHB totaled 45 kills on 115 total attacks with 21 errors while the Cowgirls had 27 kills on 111 total attacks with 17 errors.
UMHB advances to face East Division No. 1 seed and tournament-host University of Texas at Dallas on Friday, November 6
th at 5 p.m. Hardin-Simmons moves to the loser's bracket and will face the University of Texas at Tyler at 12 p.m. on Friday, November 6
th. The tournament's championship match will be played on Saturday, November 7
th at 2:00 p.m. with an if-needed game on Saturday, November 7
th at 6 p.m.
