BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's volleyball team opened the 2016 American Southwest Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament with a 3-1 win over UT Tyler Thursday evening in Belton. The win improved UMHB to 19-9 on the season while the Patriots fell to 18-8.
UMHB won the first two sets 27-25, 25-22 before falling 17-25 to UT Tyler in the third. The Cru then took the fourth set 25-19 for the four-set match win.
Sarah Paolini led UMHB with 11 kills followed by
Miranda Klein and
Abby Voskuil with nine each. UMHB hit .125 in the match with
Natasha Evans recording 24 assists while Klein added 12. Defensively,
Haleigh Evans led the Cru with 19 digs, followed by
Natasha Evans with 15.
Maddie Frerich had a dominating defensive performance at the net, recording nine blocks as UMHB totaled 14 as a team. The Cru recorded 43 kills on 144 attacks with 62 digs while the Patriots had 55 kills on 163 attacks with 69 digs.
UMHB returns to action on Friday, Nov. 4
th in a 5 p.m. semifinal match against East Division No. 1 seed UT Dallas. The winner of that match will advance to the championship contest on Saturday, Nov. at 2 p.m. while the loser will play a semifinal elimination contest on Saturday, Nov. 5
th at 11 a.m. with another chance to make the tournament final.
