LAREDO, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team beat Texas A&M International 70-52 Thursday evening in Laredo. The game was an exhibition match and does not count in the team's official record.
UMHB opened the contest with a 5-0 run and led by as many as eight points in the first quarter. The Cru limited the Dustdevils to just two points in the second quarter, outscoring TAMUI 17-2 to give UMHB a 39-20 lead at the half. UMHB shot 44.8 percent in the first half with a 66.7 percent mark from beyond the arc. The Dustdevils were limited to a 22.6 percent shooting performance, going 20 percent from beyond the arc and 50 percent from the free throw line. The Cru played a dominant third quarter, allowing just seven points. The Dustdevils made a 25-point comeback in the fourth quarter but were unable to catch UMHB.
Kendall Rollins led UMHB with 14 points followed by
Destini Oakmon and
Jonelle Smith with 11 each.
Meghan Turner,
Kendra Wynn, Smith and Oakmon each recorded three assists as UMHB totaled 15 as a team. Defensively,
Haven Neal led all athletes with three blocks and two steals. UMHB out-rebounded the Dustdevils 41-34 in the contest, bringing down nine offensive rebounds and 32 defensive boards. The Cru shot 40.7 percent in the game, 46.2 percent from beyond the arc and 83.3 percent from the free throw line.
Joanna Perez and Hannah Beede led TAMUI with 15 points each while Rosebrooke Hunt brought down a team-high 13 boards. The Dustdevils totaled 13 assists, one block and three steals. TAMUI shot 30.6 percent in the contest, 33.3 percent from beyond the arc and 25 percent from the free throw line.
UMHB returns to action on Thursday, January 5
th in a 5:30 p.m. match at the University of Texas at Tyler.
