Volleyball earns a pair of wins at ASC Crossover I

MARSHALL, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team opened play in the American Southwest Conference Crossover I with a pair of wins over East Texas Baptist University and Louisiana College. UMHB improved to 10-4 on the season and 5-0 in ASC action with the wins.
 
UMHB opened the day with a 3-1 win over crossover-host East Texas Baptist University. UMHB took the first two sets 25-22, 25-14 before falling 25-21 in the third. The Cru sealed a match-win with a 25-21 fourth-set victory. Corinne Novak led the Cru with 18 kills while Jenna Gillean had 14 and Kayla Janikula added 11. Cory Jo Martin powered UMHB's offense with 40 assists as UMHB hit 55 kills on 179 total attacks. Defensively, Adrien Valdez and Miranda Klein led with 21 digs each. Janikula led UMHB's defensive efforts at the net, putting up three solo blocks. East Texas Baptist hit 54 kills on 179 total attacks, adding 85 digs and three team blocks.
 
The Cru followed that with a 25-9, 25-12, 25-7 sweep over Louisiana College. Janikula led the Cru with 14 kills while Gillean added nine. Martin totaled 29 assists on the match with UMHB hitting .456 over three sets. Gillean was the Cru's leader in digs with 11 followed by Klein with nine and Valdez with eight. Klein added four blocks with Janikula putting up three as the Cru totaled six. Louisiana College hit 16 kills on 93 attacks for a -.022 percentage. The Wildcats totaled 30 digs with one team block.
 
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, September 28th in a 12 p.m. match against Belhaven University to close out the crossover.
