RICHARDSON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team grabbed a game one win but could not claim game two as the Cru split a doubleheader with UT Dallas Saturday afternoon in Richardson. UMHB won game one 5-0 but lost game 13-3 to move to 8-10 overall and 2-7 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. UT Dallas is now 10-6 overall and 8-4 in the ASC on the year.
UMHB used another solid pitching performance from
Andrew Acierni and timely hitting to take a 5-0 victory in game one.
Rhett Grosz blasted a three-run homer in the top of the second to give the Cru a quick 3-0 lead.
Jeb Zolman scored on a Comet balk in the top of the third inning and
Dawson Shibley added an RBI single in the top of the fourth to make it 5-0. That was more than enough offense for Acierni as he scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings. Acierni struck out three and walked just one in improving to 3-2 on the season.
Malek Bolin had three hits for the Cru and Grosz and Zolman added two hits apiece.
UTD jumped out to a big early lead and cruised to a 13-3 win in game two. The Comets put up seven runs in the bottom of the second and added one in the bottom of the third. UMHB rallied with three runs in the seventh on a pair of UTD errors. Grosz,
Caimyn Holiday and Shibley all scored on Comet miscues to cut the lead to 8-3. UT Dallas would answer with five runs in the bottom of the seventh to end the game on the run rule. Zolman and
Mateo Calle had two hits each for the Cru while
Trevor Ripke took the loss to drop to 1-3 on the season.
The Cru will now return home to host four games next week. UMHB will take on Southwestern in a 6 pm non-conference game on Tuesday before facing Sul Ross State in a three-game conference series on Thursday and Friday.
