BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team erased an early deficit with a five-run inning and the Cru completed a three-game sweep of McMurry University with a 7-1 victory Sunday in Belton. UMHB improves to 16-14 overall and 9-9 in American Southwest Conference play with the win. The loss drops the War Hawks to 8-21 overall and 5-16 in the ASC on the year.
UMHB put runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings, but could not push across a run. McMurry took the lead when Mike Gonzales singled home an unearned run in the top of the third inning.
Blake Harmon gave the Cru the lead with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth. Harmon scored on
Dawson Shibley's RBI groundout to stretch the lead to 3-1.
Ryan Farmer scored on a passed ball and
Jeb Zolman singled home another run as UMHB extended the lead to 5-1 in that inning. The War Hawks threatened to close the gap, but Shibley gunned down Mark Navarro at the plate to end the top of the sixth inning.
Caimyn Holiday doubled home a run and scored on
Hunter McQuary's RBI single as the UMHB lead grew to 7-1 in the bottom of the seventh. McMurry would not threaten again as the Cru closed out the victory.
Trevor Ripke allowed just two hits and an unearned run in five innings to raise his record to 3-4 for UMHB. He struck out five and walked two.
Rhett Grosz was the only Cru player with two hits, but UMHB finished with ten hits as a team on the day.
The game closes out the home schedule for the Cru baseball team. UMHB returns to action with a non-conference game at Southwestern University Tuesday night in Georgetown. The Cru returns to ASC action with a three-game series at Hardin-Simmons next weekend in Abilene.
