Baseball edges Southwestern 2-1

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team rallied for two runs in the top of the eighth inning and the Cru held on for a 2-1 victory over Southwestern University Tuesday night in Georgetown. UMHB improves to 17-14 with the win while the loss drops the Pirates to 15-15 on the year.

The game was scoreless going into the bottom of the sixth inning. UMHB had opportunities in the early going, but hit into three double plays in the first six at bats. Southwestern loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of that inning. Anthony Tovar got two outs, but a bases loaded walk forced in the game's first run to make it 1-0 Pirates. Tovar would work his way out of the jam to limit the damage. Mateo Calle doubled in the top of the seventh and moved to third on a passed ball, but the Cru could not get him across the plate. Kaden deBerardinis led off the top of the eighth inning with a double and moved to third on Dawson Shibley's bunt single. deBerardinis would score on a wild pitch to tie the game and Hunter McQuary drove in Shibley with a sacrifice fly to put UMHB up 2-1. Southwestern put the tying and winning runs on base on back-to-back walks to open the bottom of the ninth, but Zach Carroll retired the next three hitters to close out the victory.

Carroll pitched three no-hit innings of relief to earn the win for UMHB and raise his record to 3-0 on the year. Shibley, Calle and Blake Harmon had two hits apiece as the Cru out hit the Pirates 10-2 on the night. Three Cru pitchers combined to limit Southwestern to two hits and overcame five walks to limit the Pirates to just one run.

UMHB will return to action with a three-game American Southwest Conference series at Hardin-Simmons this weekend in Abilene. The two teams will open the series with a 7 pm single game on Friday and then close out the weekend with a 1 pm doubleheader on Saturday.
