ABILENE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team came up with several big innings to overcome a Hardin-Simmons comeback bid in a 12-6 win Friday night in Abilene. UMHB improves to 18-14 overall with its fifth straight win and the Cru is now 10-9 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. The loss drops the Cowboys to 9-22 overall and 5-14 in the ASC on the year.
Mateo Calle led off the top of the second inning by sending a ball over the right field wall for a solo home run.
Rhett Grosz doubled home a run and score on
Kaden deBerardinis' sacrifice fly to put UMHB up 3-0.
Hunter Jones doubled home a run in the top of the third to stretch the lead to 4-0. Hardin-Simmons put a run on the board in the bottom of that frame to cut the gap to 4-1The Cru answered with four runs in the top of the fifth. Jones doubled home another run and scored on Grosz's RBI single.
Dawson Shibley added a two-run single to make it an 8-1 game. The first six Cowboys batters reached base in the bottom of the inning and the first four hitters combined to hit for the cycle as HSU pulled to within 8-5. Another run scored on a double play as Hardin-Simmons finished with a five-run inning to cut it to 8-6. UMHB loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, but could not push across a run. It would stay that way into the top of the ninth before Jones provided some breathing room with a two-run single. Grosz followed with a two-run double to push the lead to 12-6.
Trevor Ripke set the Cowboys down in the bottom of the ninth to lock up the Cru victory.
Jones and Grosz had four hits and four RBI apiece for UMHB.
Hunter McQuary and
Blake Harmon added three apiece as the Cru finished with 18 hits on the night. Zach Honey earned the win for UMHB to raise his record to 2-1 and Ripke notched his third save of the year. Those two pitchers combined for five innings of two-hit relief. Jamie Dominguez had three of HSU's 12 hits on the night. Kadin Croak took the loss on the mound as the Cowboys used eight pitchers on the night.
The two teams will close out the series with a 1 pm doubleheader on Saturday. The Cru will then close out the regular season with a three-game series at Concordia Texas next weekend in Austin.
