ABILENE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team kept its hot streak going by sweeping a doubleheader from Hardin-Simmons Saturday afternoon in Abilene. The Cru took a 6-1 decision in game one and won game two by a 13-7 margin. UMHB has now won seven straight games and four straight American Southwest Conference series to improve to 20-14 overall and 12-9 in league play on the season. HSU drops to 9-24 overall and 5-16 in the ASC on the year with the two losses.
UMHB grabbed an early lead and never looked back in the 6-1 game one victory.
Malek Bolin tripled home two runs in the top of the first inning and
Dawson Shibley scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third to make it 3-0 Cru. Shibley added an RBI single in the top of the fifth and
Blake Harmon ripped a two-run homer down the left field line in the top of the sixth to make it 6-0 UMHB. The Cowboys scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to close the gap any more.
Andrew Acierni tossed a complete-game four-hitter for the Cru to improve to 4-2 on the season. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter. Shibley had two of UMHB's six hits in the win.
Game two was a slugfest with the Cru taking a 13-7 victory.
Hunter Jones singled home a run in the top of the second to give UMHB a 1-0 lead. The Cowboys scored two in the bottom of the inning, but the Cru answered with RBI singles from Shibley and
Caimyn Holiday in the top of the third.
Rhett Grosz scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth to make it 4-2 and UMHB put up four runs in the top of the fifth.
Kaden deBerardinis scored the first run on an error, Jones singled home two more runs and
Daylon Nebgen added an RBI single for an 8-2 Cru lead. HSU added four of its own in the bottom of that inning to pull to within 8-6. Bolin and Grosz both hit two-run homers in the top of the sixth to make it a 12-6 game. Hardin-Simmons tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Bolin walked with the bases loaded the top of the seventh to stretch it to the final margin.
Logan Pace earned the win for UMHB to go to 1-0 on the season and
Alex Palczewski notched his first save. Holiday, Jones and Grosz all had two hits apiece.
UMHB clinched a winning record in the regular season and also locked up a berth in the ASC Championship Tournament with the game one victory. The Cru will close out the regular season with a three-game ASC series at Concordia Texas next weekend in Austin.
