Baseball splits doubleheader with Concordia to close out regular season

AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team closed out the regular season by splitting a doubleheader with Concordia Texas Sunday afternoon in Austin. UMHB won the opener 8-1 to close out a game that was suspended from Saturday before the Tornados answered with an 8-1 win of their own in game two. The Cru finishes the regular season at 21-15 overall and 13-10 in American Southwest Conference play. Concordia is now 19-11 overall and went 14-9 in the ASC on the year.

UMHB took game one 8-1 to close out a game suspended from Saturday afternoon. The Cru took control of the game with five runs in the top of the third inning. Dawson Shibley singled home the first run, Malek Bolin added a two-run double and Hunter Jones closed out the scoring with a two-run single. Shibley added an RBI double in the top of the fourth to make it 6-0, Ryan Farmer singled home a run in the top of the sixth and Jones drove in a run with a groundout to make it 8-0 UMHB in the top of the seventh. Concordia scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but could not get any closer. Andrew Acierni earned the win for the Cru to improve to 6-2 with three innings of scoreless, two-hit relief work. Shibley, Bolin and Blake Harmon had two hits apiece for UMHB.

The Cru fell behind in the opening inning of game two and never recovered in an 8-1 loss. Bret Leiferman hit a two-run homer for the Tornados in the opening frame for the quick lead. Harmon's sacrifice fly cut it to 2-1 in the top of the second, but Concordia added single runs in the second and seventh innings and put four on the board in the bottom of the fifth to account for the final margin. Jones and Caimyn Holiday had two hits apiece in the Cru's nine-hit attack. Alex Palczewski took the loss for UMHB to drop to 2-2 on the season as the Cru used seven pitchers in the contest.

The 21 victories are the most for the Cru baseball team in a regular season since the 2017 campaign. UMHB will now advance to the ASC Championship Tournament as the #5 seed. The Cru will compete in the Tournament's "Blue" Bracket and open the tournament with a rematch against Concordia at 11 am on Thursday, May 6th, in Richardson. UT Dallas will host the double elimination bracket that also includes the Comets and LeTourneau University.
